How important is luck and fate?

How important is it?
Which scenario would be better?

Since luck/fate is out of our control, Does that make luck/fate the most important thing or is it then the most neglible factor in doing something.

A lucky man might strike it rich through lottery, but he could end up poor through mismanagement of his financial assets.

A Hardworking man could work himself from the ground up into power and fortune, only to end up in bankruptcy due to external factors.

So which is really important? the uncontrollable or the controllable?

I believe both are.
